An unprecedented 10 million people have applied for unemployment insurance in the past two weeks, and more are likely to come. Many American employers are responding to shutdown orders, their lack of cash flow, and the general crisis by laying people off.   Most companies and workers haven’t heard about it, but work sharing, also known as “short time compensation” is a way to avoid layoffs and keep people employed, while also drastically reducing employer payroll.
